After a few weeks off, I’ve decided to pick up this rant series again. I like that I’ve set this up so I can get random junk off of my chest while getting weird with the concepts. Plus, this series has started to build a theme of dealing with the odd energies and spiritual connections we share as humans, and I’d love to keep that conversation rolling on a regular basis, even if it doesn’t always make sense. So to get back into the rhythm, tonight I’d like to rant about a topic that constantly piques my interest – energy flow.
When I hear the words energy flow, I immediately think of a song called Energy from one of my favorite music groups, Disclosure. I’m sure they weren’t the first to say it, but one of the lyrics goes “Where the focus goes, the energy flows.” It’s a catchy tune already, but this line in particular always stick with me when I hear it. On the surface it’s a simple idea. If you focus on something, you’re both physically and mentally more capable to complete a task than if you don’t focus. You could say that focusing is a way of channeling your energy towards your goal. It’s like a cheat code to having better luck. If you’re careful and pay attention, you’re allowing yourself a better chance to thrive in life.
Yet I think we can dig a little deeper. To me, energy isn’t always just calories in and calories out like science might suggest. I believe there’s energy drawn to us from how we act and how we live our lives. Almost like a universal karma for all, where acts of kindness and sincerity are returned with the flow of positive energy, but acts of selfishness and cruelty are met with negative energy. I’m not certain it’s exactly this straightforward, but essentially the idea is that those that are good to others and fair to the ones around them are typically rewarded in kind. Or, from another perspective, this could include those that have responsibility to take care of themselves and others around them with healthy habits and actions.
Take a guy like myself for instance. This is a lazy example, but if i spend the weekend drinking beer and playing video games then I’m not doing myself any favors in the energy department. On the flip side, if I follow my morning routine, eat well, work out and stay off the couch, it’s very likely I’ll have so much more energy the next day. There’s a balance to the energies based on your actions.
There’s about a million variations of those examples with the point being that spending time focusing on positive things will lead to positive results. It’s not guaranteed, but I truly believe there’s a significant difference in centering energy around positive sources rather than those that are draining.
Here’s the thing. As I’m writing this, most of this idea seems like a drunk 4th grader came up with it. Yet at the same time there was a period of my life where all I did was listen to dark and depressing music, watch dark tv shows, and hate going to class or doing anything in general. There wasn’t a lot of positive energy flowing toward me, and in many ways that depleted my energy reserves. I became drained and depressed, and I can confidently say it was largely due to my surroundings. Happily this is no longer the case, but I often wish I’d taken this concept into consideration much sooner.
So the idea now is to focus on the positive in life. I recognize and respect the darker side of life that I used to admire. But at the same time, I realize that part of me doesn’t make me happy, nor does it improve my life in any way. Instead of focusing on indulging the sadness, focus on having a goal. Focus on doing something good. Focus on doing anything at all that brings positive energy rather than negative.
Thinking of those lyrics again, I feel pretty confident saying that Disclosure was suggesting we are the creators of our own energy fields. Whatever we focus on will determine our energy, which means that our environment and what we give our time to will determine how we act. So figure out your shit and shape your life how you want it to be by making every bit of your life into something that guides you towards your goals. That’s it. And I think that’s enough for one night.
As always, thanks for reading. Rock on, stay strong.
